Research and
Education at the Institute of Water
Quality Control covers several aspects:
Traditionally Water Quality Control is a cross discipline, in which civil engineering, process technology and chemistry/biology develop with each other. Very early architectural engineering was responsible for the construction of buildings (e.g. aqueducts build by romans) which were used to supply residential areas with fresh water. Gradually the disposal of wastewater became necessary in growing settlements, which was again mainly done by civil engineers. Wastewater sewers were established during the transition of 19th to 20th century in nearly all main capitals in Europe in order to minimize the risk of infectious disease. Over the past 100 years more and more knowledge on process-technical aspects for design and operation of reactors for water and wastewater treatment has been achieved. In the second half of the last century it has been shown that more knowledge on the physical and biochemical processes is necessary for the development of new reactors. Furthermore, a better understanding of the interplay of wastewater discharge and surface water quality has been established.
Teaching lessons of the institute are targeted to impart students a scientific
and engineering fundamental knowledge, which will be needed in practice to get
a successful interdisciplinary collaboration with experts from other disciplines.
The institute devotes itself to all involved fields from production, treatment and supply of drinking water throughout collection, treatment, reuse and discharge
of wastewater. River basin management will be of great interest in future
research.
The complex tasks
of our institute require fundamentals as well as practice-oriented research work. Our team is composed inter
disciplinary of engineers and nature science researchers and works with the
help of advanced instruments on current problems:
